What Is The Stealth Syndromes Project?

The Stealth Syndromes Project (formerly known as the Stealth Epidemic Project) is an undertaking of two scientists — Lewis Perdue and Becca Yeamans — to help the general public reduce  personal risk from hormone disrupting chemicals – also known as Endocrine Disruptors.

To do this, Lew and Becca have created three activities that form the foundation of the Stealth Syndromes project:

  1. Consumer tactics — including the use of Lewe as an experimental lab rat — to show how to reduce their hormone disruptor risk.
  2. Science for the intelligent consumer to understand why they should care about hormone disruptors
  3. Original scientific research and comment.

Credibility Demands a “Bass-Ackwards” Progression

Lew and Becca started first with establishing a firm scientific basis. This includes original research and comment published with proper citations at: Nano Active.

Mission Statement

The Stealth Syndromes Project will enable people to protect themselves and their loved ones from hormone disruptor illnesses by explaining the dangers in clear language and offering tested, realistic tactics and solutions they can apply in everyday living.

The Stealth Syndromes Project will raise broad public awareness of EDCs through original research, a scientific web site and a consumer-oriented book.

The project is headed by two scientists, one of whom is a NY Times best-selling author, and the other an experienced university drug-trial expert.

The Stealth Syndromes Project: Components

The Stealth Syndromes Project has the following main components:

Nano-active.com is a web site designed to advance knowledge among science professionals and to establish credibility of the Stealth Syndromes Project’s collaborators.

In addition to reviewing and pulling together the latest research on EDCs and health, the site is devoted to inter-disciplinary studies to unite EDC research with that in the fields of cancer, obesity, diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease, behavioral problems, neurological diseases, infertility and other illnesses.

The professionals in those disparate fields are inundated with their own disciplines and, as a result, have not made many important connections with the results of studies in other disciplines.

We have already identified more than 50 such previously unidentified connections in scientific papers, in which EDCs act on mechanisms in human cells in identical ways with identical outcomes as in those previously mentioned non-EDC disciplines.

Please refer to: Strongest Evidence Yet Between BPA and Thyroid Cancer for the first of these connections which has been turned into a mini-paper.

Nano-Active.Com is the scientific epicenter of the Stealth Syndromes Project and has several goals:

  • Advance scientific discovery across disciplines.
  • Discover new, previously unknown cross-disciplinary connections
  • Form a credible scientific core based on peer-reviewed, published scientific papers.
  • Serve as the scientific backbone of articles and a book written for a general, non-scientific reading public.
  • Pre-empt with indisputable science and data, the expected industry denigration of the data and the conclusions

Web Sites

Scientific: Nano-Active.com — Website to describe all results — new studies, our original research and results and all product-oriented information — in a detailed, fully documented and footnoted way. The fact the my co-author and I are (or, in my case have been) scientists separates us from the average science writers. This site has started to roll out and is gathering traction among members of Researchgate. We intend to establish scientific credibility and to begin to elicit reaction — both supportive and negative — among scientists.

Negative reactions will be a good indication of who will be attacking when the book comes out. This preview will allow us to prepare and pre-empt as we roll out major media and publicity for the consumer side of things.

Stealth Syndromes: The Book For The Intelligent Reader

We anticipate writing a science book on the fundamental roles that endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) play in serious diseases. We will also show how they share a common, unifying role in multiple maladies. (And at the very least, better identifying common mechanisms and signaling pathways common to them all).

The book (working title: “Stealth Syndromes”) will be written as one that can be understood by an intelligent lay person.

To make the book as approachable and readable as possible, the book will be told in short (1,500 to 2,000-word) chapters with original illustrations and diagrams.

Wherever possible, the book will offer valid analogies from real life, vignettes of real people involved in research or individual struggling to survive diseases that EDCs can promote.

We understand that people have “toxic warning fatigue” that frighten, anger and frustrate but offer no individual action items

That is why Stealth Syndromes is going many additional miles to offer valid, reasonable ways and suggestions that readers could apply to help themselves avoid EDCs.

Each chapter or section will contain a unifying narrative describing the Lew’s “Human Lab Rat” attempts to lower their body EDC levels. This will include the specific products and techniques used in the testing.

Building on The Human Lab at will be a section offering tips and information that readers can realistically use in their daily lives to protect themselves and their children, families, friends and others.

The specific tips and products can also provide credible data for people who wish to encourage retailers and manufacturers to stock safer products. Chapters in the book will offer readers resources to make that task easier and more effective.

Safe Products Database and Mobile App

We will create a searchable, product-specific database accessible for free by the public of all product results and information rated as:

  1. Confirmed free of Estrogenic Activity (EA) by testing.
  2. EA-Free according to a company inquiry.
  3. Confirmed NOT EA-Free
  4. Unknown

To gather that information, we will rely on all possible sources:

  • Testing Labs who will receive credit for all testing they do.
  • Scouring results from published studies.
  • Questionaires we send to companies and manufacturers asking if they have had their products tested for EA. If so, by whom and what were the results. The results of those inquiries will be entered into the database as one of the four possibilities above. It will be noted whether the company failed to respond.

We will ask Testing labs to spot-check those products that companies say are EA-free.

Mobile App

In addition to the database being available on the web sites, iOS and Android apps will allow consumers to scan UPC bar codes and get an instant read on the EA status of a product.

If the product is not in our data base, the consumer can request — by pushing a single button — that it be tested.

Consumer requests for testing will be instantly tabulated (minus their identity) and a running score available online for anyone — especially manufacturers — to see.

Original Research

Science: Knowing More And More About Less And Less

As more and more data accumulate, the enormous body of work that must be comprehended means that individual scientists and researchers know more and more about less and less. In other words, more attention must be focused on narrower targets of inquiry.

Because of this, broader trends and correlations can – and are – missed.

This is especially significant in the very active fields of Endocrine Disruptors, cancer, obesity, Alzheimer’s Disease, Diabetes and infertility.

The Stealth Syndromes’s ad hoc searching has made new and significant correlations in this matter. The first of these connections has been turned into a mini-paper — Strongest Evidence Yet Between BPA and Thyroid Cancer. Scores of similar connections need attention.

Each of the fields mentioned above has papers and other work identifying specific signaling pathways, gene product expressions and other mechanisms. No one, as yet, has made a concerted effort to correlate the mechanisms that others have in common.

The Stealth Syndromes Project plans to coordinate just such an effort with the cooperation of appropriate biology, chemistry and environmental science departments at major universities.

Cross-Disciplinary Academic Activity: One Mechanism, One Student

We envision assigning one known EDC mechanism to one student in a class. The students will be given source materials, a set of possible search resources then sent on an “Easter Egg Hunt” to see which of the fields listed above their assigned mechanism can be found.

The correlation data will be entered in a searchable data base which will identify EDC mechanisms that have also been discovered in the diseases listed above.

Because this database will be fully searchable, it is probable that additional, as-yet-unknown mechanisms will also be found in common among cancer, obesity, Alzheimer’s Disease, Diabetes and infertility.
